Graphic Designer and Audiovisual Director specialised in Stop Motion Animation, Hugo Covarrubias began his career into animation with the play Maleza (2005), a performance that fuse theatre and stop-motion animation.
Later on, he directed the short films “El Almohadón de Plumas” (2007) and “La Noche Boca Arriba (2012)”, as well as four theatre-animation plays, including “Un Poco Invisible” (2013).
At Zumbastico Studios, Covarrubias assumed the role of Stop Motion Animation Director for the series “The Ogre & The Chicken” (2009), “Horatio & the Plasticines” (2013) and was co-creator and director of the series “Paper Port” (2015). Afterwards, he served as Art Director on the stop-motion animated series “Zander” for the Tres Tercios studio.
In 2022, Hugo Covarrubias premiered his short film ‘Beast’ at the Chilemonos International Animation Festival, winning the competition and being nominated for an Oscar in the category of Best Latin American Animated Short Film.
He is currently in the process of developing his new works, as well as teaching as an academic in the area of animation.
